The calendar points it out – Memorial Day, the official start of Minnesota’s precious summer season, is on its way. Like many of us, I’m eagerly anticipating weekends at the cabin, gatherings on the deck, outdoor concerts and many more good times.
At the same time, I’ll admit to harboring some trepidation as summer approaches. As we as traffic safety advocates know, the arrival of Memorial Day is also the start of what are considered the 100 most dangerous days on our roadways. Crash deaths and injuries typically rise significantly between Memorial Day and Labor Day as motorists hit the road for vacations, roadside construction increases, and long holiday weekends mean more drivers are impaired by consumption of alcohol and other substances. Speed and distraction also play big roles in summertime crashes. Teen drivers are particularly at risk for involvement in serious crashes during this period.
While I’m concerned about what’s likely ahead on Minnesota roadways, I’m also very optimistic thanks to the relentless efforts of so many to educate drivers. State and national campaigns are planned that include paid media and social media. Our state, county and local officers will invest their time in special enforcement efforts on our holiday weekend roads. Check out the May issue of the DriveSafeMN newsletter for details and links to campaign materials. We’ve all got a part to play.
So before you turn on that out-of-office message and prepare to enjoy these great summer weekends with friend and family, do this. Make a personal commitment to share a summer traffic safety reminder with your team asking them to slow down, pay attention and make sure they always have a sober ride before the fun begins.
Let’s work together to make sure everyone enjoys many more spectacular Minnesota summers.
Yours in traffic safety,
Lisa
