We’re all familiar with the old adage “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”  Those words never ring so true as during summertime on Minnesota roads when journeys can take on a meaning well beyond the idea of savoring each moment.

In my role as a traffic safety educator and advocate, I spend a lot of hours on our state’s highways and two-lanes. And, like many of you, during the summer months I add to my behind-the-wheel time with trips to the cabin, family gatherings and more seasonal fun.

As a result, I’m well acquainted with the not-so-fun parts of summer travel – traffic congestion, steamy hot days, roadway construction and risky driver behaviors like  distraction and excessive speed. It’s human nature to get frustrated, and sometimes a little angry, due to delays and the actions of other drivers, even when you know there’s little you can do to change the situation.

Our traffic safety mantra year-around is “slow down” and “pay attention.” But this summer I want to add two more words of advice: Keep calm. When you’re frustrated and angry, it’s all too easy to make a risky maneuver that can end in tragedy.

Keeping calm is especially important this summer with more than 200 road repair projects underway on interstates and state roads throughout Minnesota that result in lane closures (zipper merge, please, people!) and lengthy backups. It can be helpful to remind yourself how much you’re going to enjoy those improved roadways, bridges and exit ramps when they are done! In the meantime, perhaps we should all embrace the ubiquitous work zone orange as our cue to take a deep breath, slow down and put our focus on keeping roadway workers, those in our vehicles and others around us safe.

Here’s to a summer full of safe trips and good memories.

Yours in traffic safety,

Lisa
