Nothing chases away the winter doldrums like a chance to celebrate with family and friends. Thankfully our first big chance to do that in 2026 is nearly here! Super Bowl Sunday is Feb. 8 and whether or not your team is in the big game, you’re looking forward to the half-time show or you’re just there for the advertisements and the snacks, there’s something for almost everyone to enjoy.
Just remember to keep the trip home safe.
I’m not here to put a damper on the party. I assure you I’ll be watching and celebrating, too. I just want to remind all of us that national celebrations like the Super Bowl, the three major summer holidays, Christmas and New Year’s Eve come often include the unwanted consequence of impaired driving crashes, injuries and deaths.
Each year Super Bowl weekend brings a significant spike in U.S. traffic fatalities, averaging around 104 deaths on Super Bowl Sunday alone. Alcohol impairment is often involved, leading to a 30% or more increase in alcohol-related crashes compared to normal weekends.
As we all “train” for the big game, here are some great plays you can run in advance:
- If you’re a traffic safety leader or advocate, check out the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk materials focused on Super Bowl Weekend. There are ads and news releases you can use in your community and materials to remind you own team members how to stay safe.
- If you’re a host, collect guest vehicle keys when they arrive, offer plenty of food and an array of non-alcoholic drinks. If someone appears impaired, arrange for a ride or a spot on your couch.
- If you’re a guest, make sure you have a designated driver or plan for a ride-share or taxi service before the game starts.
Remember, no matter which team wins or loses, the most important outcome of the game is making sure everyone returns home safely.
Yours in traffic safety,
Lisa
